Blue Cross of California is a subsidiary of WellPoint Health Networks, which is one of the largest publicly, traded managed health care companies in the nation with over 7.6 million medical members.  WellPoint’s corporate headquarters are located in Thousand Oaks California and in 1999 they earned revenues of $7.5 billion.  Blue Cross of California began in 1937 and currently with its affiliate, Blue Cross Life & Health Company; they provide service to more than 5 million members.  Blue Cross’s California network is one of the largest in the state with more than 40,000 PPO physicians, 29,000 HMO physicians and over 400 hospitals.
