Health Net is a subsidiary of Foundation Health Systems and was started operating in 1979 by offering healthcare to about 50,000 Californians.  Today Health Net has an extensive network of nearly 45,000 physicians, 750 physician groups and affiliates, and 4,200 pharmacies.  This network gives services to 2 million members in 46 of the 58 counties in California.  Foundation Health Systems, of which Health Net is a subsidiary, is the fourth largest publicly traded managed-care organization in the U.S.
